Migrating to a foreign country can present great opportunities and a better way of life, but it can also be a frustrating and challenging move involving struggles to adjust to the new environment. Sometimes when faced with such challenges, migrants might wish to return home, but this return is never easy. Fulfilling expectations and coming home with full hands is a difficult task, and for many #migrants, a nearly unachievable goal. Andrea Götzelmann, who heads IOM’s Department of Assisted Voluntary Return Reintegration in #Austria, recently spoke at a TEDx talk event in Linz, Austria. Götzelmann explains how this return process works, and the support returning migrants require in order to settle back home. In Austria, we have worked with the Ministry of the Interior since 2000 to implement a General Humanitarian Voluntary Return Programme. Our team offers assistance in organising the homeward journey before, during and after return, taking into consideration the special needs of unaccompanied minors, women, the elderly and persons with medical issues. At present, IOM implements reintegration assistance specifically for returnees to Nigeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Russian Federation / Chechen Republic, as well as specific groups who are victims of #trafficking. In 2013, IOM assisted 2,896 persons to return voluntarily compared to 419 in the year 2000. In 2013, the Austrian Ministry of the Interior reported that 3,518 voluntary returns were recorded; the figure includes assisted voluntary returns.
