Militants attack police post at JNV Shopian SHOWKAT DAR Shopian, July 4: Militants fired upon a police picket guarding Jawahar Navodya Vidyalaya ( JNV) in Shopian district of south Kashmir but caused no casualties or damage, police said Friday. Militants opened fire towards the positions of police personnel at around 10.00 PM yesterday at the school located at Aglar in Shopian, a police official said. He said the cops retaliated the firing, forcing the militants to flee. Although no one was hurt in the brief exchange of fire, the firing trigger panic among the students including girls who were putting up at the hostel of the boarding school. “ Frightened by the exchange of fire, several students fell unconscious,” eyewitnesses said. Principal of the JNV, J R Bright John said he was talking to someone over phone when he heard the gunshots. Following the firing incident, the school management announced summer vacations from Friday, two days ahead of the schedule. PROTESTS IN TRAL Meanwhile, accusing the army of resorting to unprovoked firing in their village, residents of Shariefabad, Tral last evening staged massive protests in the area. “ Some army men fired near the residential house of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant to harass the inmates,” locals said. However, a police officer said the army had witnessed some suspicious movement in the area and opened fire, “ but the militants managed to escape from the spot.”
