Minister Directs Universities to Access Outstanding TETFund Allocations Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has directed Federal Tertiary institutions across the country to take urgent steps to access outstanding allocations domiciled at the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), to develop necessary infrastructure for teaching and learning. Speaking at the South East Zonal Town Hall Meeting on TETFund interventions, held at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC), last Tuesday, the Minister implored tertiary institutions to improve the capacity of their physical planning staff to expedite actions on project execution. He urged members of TETFund’s Board of Trustees and Management to look into the challenges that institutions encountered when applying to access these funds. According to the Minister, the Fund should ensure maximum success by effectively tackling the challenges that hinder universities from promptly accessing funds allocated to them. Barr. Wike noted the tremendous progress recorded in areas such as the provision of basic infrastructure witnessed in several institutions across the country, despite these challenges. The Minister informed the gathering of the significance of TETFunds Town Hall Meetings, noting that the event would expose the falsehood being peddled by politically minded persons on the developments in the Nigerian University System (NUS). He added that “these town hall meetings have exposed the truth about the investments by President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration in the education sector, which have become obvious in institutions across the country”. Barr. Wike also noted that no other administration had invested as much as the present one in tertiary education. “We have witnessed increased TETFund allocations and the Special Interventions to universities after the Needs Assessment report”, the Minister maintained. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr. Mac- John Nwaobiala, observed that the town hall meetings were transparent in all manner and would assist respective institutions to stir up development through the sharing of experiences. The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Prof. Bartho Okolo, whose University hosted the Meeting, disclosed that the developmental projects being executed on the University’s three campuses, had direct impact on the staff and students. All federal tertiary institutions in the South East Zone, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, were present at the Meeting. These institutions had individual presentations of their current status in the utilisation of TETFund allocations.
