Minnesota Update - Whats it like to be a teacher today? Im working special education in an elementary environment for the next two weeks. I had to take down a 4th grader. He weighs as much as I do. The paraprofessionals refused to take him down because theyve all been hurt dealing with this kid. Didnt bother me, Ive worked in the military for 20 years, I knew what to do. 10 minutes of mess. I had to pull him down, and I sat on his arm and held the other with my other arm while he kicked me a few times. The paraprofessionals went to find someone else to help hold him down, but no one was available. I had to fill out the paperwork afterwards, and I felt like I was in trouble. He went to the office after class and reported it. I went to the office and reported it. I talked with the principal. So now, I have to wait and find out what happens next. You want to know what its like teaching in our schools now? I had one of my technology students kill one of our 7th graders in Alaska, and today, Im pulling down a fourth grader so he doesnt hurt anyone. Yeah, do I want to keep doing this? I love teaching. I love watching them grow, and the students and some teachers tell me Im the best teacher theyve ever had or seen, but then, things like this happen. Im so tired of seeing police officers roaming the halls in middle and high schools. Im so tired of worrying because some student complains that I forced him down on the ground until they settled down. This kid pulled all the artwork off the walls of the school while we walked to the cafeteria, with the vice principal watching the whole time, and there is nothing we can do about it. I had the whole class finishing a spelling test within 5 minutes of the incident, but Im sure Ill be hearing a lot more when I get to school in the morning. Why would anyone choose to be an elementary teacher today? Because they are awesome. Kids are wonderful, and its worth the effort. Even with the students that should be removed from the system, I make a difference to some and its great when they and their parents thank me for being there to help them learn.
