Moment in History: It was 77 years ago today (July 2) that the Lockheed airplane flown by Amelia Earhart and navigator Frederick Noonan was reported missing in the Pacific Ocean. The pair were in the process of flying around the world, when the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca reported sporadic radio contact with Earhart as she approached Howland Island, in the Pacific. The final messages received from Earhart were that they were lost and running low on fuel. No trace of the two was ever found, according to History. Although additional searches have been conducted over the years in an effort to find the aviators, their plane or evidence of what may have happened, nothing has been presented. However, there has been much speculation surrounding their disappearance. Several pieces of Earhart-related memorabilia has changed hands at auction in recent years, including a: • Pair of Luxor No. 6 aviation goggles, reportedly worn by Amelia Earhart’s first crash at Goodyear Field while she was learning to fly an Airster, in July of 1921. The goggles sold for $18,150 in Sept. 2011 through Clars Auction Gallery.
