Monday = Laundry Day...Heres why.... Monday for laundry apparently started when the two-day weekend (Saturday/Sunday) took hold in post-industrial revolution western Europe and America. Laundry was done on Mondays partly because it was practical. Laundry day also basically disappeared when home washers & dryers became common, meaning by the 1960s. Remember laundry wasnt just a half-day or one-day effort. The laundry had to be washed and then hung to dry. Drying could take overnight. Then the next day was for ironing (no permanent press clothing), Style required ironing most clothing, and ironing also kills bugs (important in tropical & semi-tropical areas). It couldnt be on Sunday, which is the Christian day of rest. It also couldnt be on Saturday because Saturday was set aside for fun. Even if no fun on Saturday, ironing would have to occur on Sunday (a no-no). Friday is out because ironing would have to be accomplished on Saturday. That leaves Monday to Thursday. Mondays can be a bad day to go shopping, etc. because many services are traditionally closed on Mondays (ex. Barbers). Laundry would also have accumulated over the weekend so Monday was a good day to do it, followed by ironing on Tuesday. That left Wednesday & Thursday to accomplish tasks outside the home. If you are aware of some specific reason why Mondays are laundry day then please let me know.
