More MLB Nostalgia many knowledable local baseball fans know that the 1971 All Star game in Detroit is considered one of the best all star games ever played. In addition most remember or have heard that Reggie Jackson hit one of the longest projected home runs in history that night, hitting the light tower in right centerfield, it was said that the baseball was still on an upward climb when it hit the tower estimated at 500+ ft.But did you know that game holds record for most(future) hall of famers ever to participate in an all star game, 22 in all that would eventually enter the Hall of Fame w the likes of Mays, Aaron ,Clemente, Stargell, Bench, Kaline, Yastremski, Killebrew, Thurman Munson, Frank Robinson, Rod Carew and on and on. But upon further reading, one fact I didnt realize was it marked the first time in all star history 2 afro americans were both named starting pithers for each league , with Vida Blue starting for the A.L. and Doc Ellis starting for the N.L. Vida Blue had been penciled in to start for the A.L. but Doc Ellis didnt think he would get the nod in saying theres no way they are going to let 2 brothers start against each other in the all star game. But the N.L. manager for the All Star team that year was one Sparky Anderson, who then did name Ellis the starter, and as they say the rest is history But definitely that game was one for the ages, a fantastic game with 6 Home runs hit all by future hall of famers and the American League winning the game by a score of 6 to 4.
