Luckily, we were there right when the fires started, and they were both quite small. But if Rowdy hadnt had the tools in his truck, we would not have been nearly as effective. I can assure everyone that Ill be carrying a fire extinguisher and shovel in my trunk from now on! Jenis story for those who have not read about it: I just helped put out two baby forest fires by the side of Hwy 79 around 5pm today! I was driving home from Guatay and saw smoke, so I stopped to help. There were 2 tiny fires about 15 feet apart... they had JUST started. There was a guy already stopped, and he had a fire extinguisher and a dustpan in his truck. He sprayed and I scraped, and we both stomped on the hot spots with our feet. There was no cell service where the fires were, so once we had things under control we agreed that I would go call 911 and he would wait for the fire truck to arrive. But, someone else mustve already called, because before I got back to my car a deputy sheriff came screaming up with lights flashing. Of course, he was looking for fires, and the fires were already out, so he almost passed us by. I waved my arms in the air and he stopped. Whew! Close call. The edge of the burned spots was no more than 2 feet from the edge of the forest. THE TIP OF THE WEEK: iF YOU DRIVE IN A FIRE PRONE AREA, CARRY A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND A SHOVEL IN YOUR CAR OR TRUCK
