Morena my peoples well I guess you could say KORERO KONA is back in the whare and although its still pre season I thort id report to you the game that was played in Masterton yesterday vs PIONEER. With the threat of Cyclone Lucy looming the PREMIER R.W.B brothers left the Temepara for the Wairarapa to face Pioneer in a pre season match. Our opponents were unknown to us, all that we knew was this was a maori team and they were like the Ratana of Masterton, so to speak, even down to the colours (red white n blue). Heading for a 2.30pm kick off a quick warm up and a team split saw us ready for battle. A good crowd of the hau kainga showed up to watch the game and our HEARTY TAUTOKO PARTY ,Nanny Lorna, Della, Kare, Trina, were there to support the Boys which was and is always appreciated. 20min quarters was the order of the day and our first 20 was about settling into the game, we showed promise early with some good defence and back attacks, lineouts were ok at times but some miscommunication led us to messy ball or turn over of possession. Our scrum was put under pressure a lot but with a makeshift pack and some playing out of position it was inevitable. ( note; scrum work Tuesday n Thursday). The korero at the break was about not rushing and look to working on our structure and look after the ball when we did have it. The 2nd quarter produced glimpses of structure but with very little ball we were unable to build on it and our defence was tested time and time again. A couple of Hongis and whaikorero (feisty exchanges lol) were exchanged btween the 2 tribes lol but it was sorted and play resumed, typical tribal warfare lol. The boys scored a try through the backs with a great back move spreading the ball wide and a chip back in field by winger Alan Penetito which was gathered in by Te Tua Kemp to score under the post. Half time and the korero remained the same that was to concentrate on what we came to play for, to see where we were at, to look at our structure and to look at combinations and individuals, It was all about us. The rest of the game was similar to that of the first 40min. with, I think, the score being 37-7 to Pioneer, score aside a pre season match is, to me, as I said earlier, a chance to see where your team and individuals are at. It was what it was and thats it. With only 1 training with everybody there since Feb1, it makes it hard on everybody to reach goals etc. Our premier team has all the promise you could want in a team but promises can be broken if they are not worked at and actioned. A couple of mentions must go out to a few players namely Te Rokena Matthews for his vision at 1st 5/8 good distribution skills and harty defence, to Charlie Mete for his Busting runs up the middle and tenacious attitude for the game, Gareth Maraku the pick n go master lol and finally to Kamaka Manuel for showing the brothers about HEART and who is and has always been a workhorse for the brothers, something you very rarely find amongst our young brothers and at the end of the day we all need to take a leaf out of brother Kamakas book on HEART. But I must commend the boys for taking up the challenge of yesterdays game and also for mentally getting back into the game after the hongi and whaikorero episode. A couple of injuries one to Sean Van-der-Lubbe who came off with a knee injury due to a pot hole, one of Ratanas promising players and someone to watch out for in the near future and someone who the bros didnt want to get injured, look after the knee boy come back wen its 100%. And Gerrard Paki dislocated his pinky and is now in a splint not a major but an injury all the same. TUMEKE TO ALL good effort my brothers, Training Tuesday 6.30pm at Springvale Park this is an IMPORTANT one brothers so unless your working please make the effort. Lateness will incur a penalty for EVERYBODY. No reira my peoples stay tuned for more, next game is RUAPEHU 29th March at Ohakune R.W.B MORE THAN A TEAM, MORE LIKE A COMMUNITY !!WE ARE!!
