Most technologies seem too costly to be practical when first introduced, and then become more cost efficient when their presence on the free market and consumers demand drive the development of more efficient means of production and distribution. It was this way with automobiles 120+ years ago, and with mobile phones just a few decades ago. Now these technologies are at the center of our infrastructure. So to say that renewable energy is not cost effective, is not only dreadfully short sighted and uninformed; it also expresses a lack of understanding for how a free market economy actually works. And thats just un-American!
