Most three year olds do not know what hospitals, transfusions, or bone marrow is; however, for Moriah Thompson the last year has been a roller coaster of needles, transfusion, and bone marrow test. Moriah has been battling severe anemia since October 2013. During the initial onset she was extremely lethargic, yellow/pale in color, and was not eating. Her Pediatrician ordered a blood screen and immediately sent her to Morgantown where Moriah received a transfusion and a bone marrow test. Moriah’s parents, Josh and Melia, were told it was only a virus and things would begin to look better over the next year. Moriah had been doing fairly well until June 2014, when she once again began experience the same symptoms as before. She was taken to see her Hematologist the beginning of July. At that time, her hemoglobin tested low enough for another transfusion and after speaking with the doctors - another bone marrow was scheduled. As of latest testing, they know Moriah has a form of bone marrow failure. Due to this failure, her bone marrow is releasing her red blood cells into the blood stream before they are mature enough to live a full life span – which is leading to her anemia. There is also Fibrosis developing around the bone marrow - a condition both life-threatening and serious – it is extremely rare with only 14 documented cases in Pediatrics. At this time Moriah is stable, she does have low white blood count – making her more susceptible to infections, and is still becoming extremely tired and irritable at times. However, she keeps a smile on her face as well as everyone around her. Moriah is a smart, quirky, creative, and beautiful little girl. She lives with her parents, Josh and Melia Thompson in Green Bank, WV. She loves all things animals, but is partial to chickens, dogs, and horses! She calls her back porch, “my stage,” and loves to dance and sing – sometimes with a chicken in hand. She was once full of energy and spunk, her parents hope and pray to see her at full speed again in the near future. :)
