Mr. Cub: a Gentle Papa Bear. Ernie Banks was known more for - TopicsExpress

Mr. Cub: a Gentle Papa Bear. Ernie Banks was known more for his great personality than his great achievements on the baseball diamond. He enjoyed living...baseball was an extra that was thrown into the mix. Elected to the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, his top salary was $65,000 per year. Ernie felt that the game of baseball was about its excitement, not its paycheck. Born in Dallas, TX, one of 12 children, he was known for his good heart even as a young boy, unopposed to helping out around their home. An attender of church and Sunday School, his mom thought he may go into the ministry, following in the steps of his grandpa. Yet, he ministered to others by his warm, genuine heart on and off the field. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. Incidentally, he reached 500 homers and 1600 rbis on the same day. You are loved, missed and appreciated, Mr. Cub.
