Mum question:My 13mth old daughter is a biter. She has been for some time now and will bite my chest area, arms, fingers, legs, anything she can get her teeth into. It normally happens when she is a bit excited or when shes ready for a sleep. She also likes to pinch and slap. Both my husband and I are very affectionate with her and are constantly covering her in kisses and playing around with her, and am worried this has lead to her thinking that biting is ok and that it is a game. So far Ive been telling her no, tapping her on the hand, and at times biting her back, but none of these methods are working. Do you think this will be something she will grow out of? Id hate for her to be one of those kids that bites and pinches her friends. Pinky says: Its great that you have worked out triggers for your little ones biting. She may be trying to kiss but not realising biting hurts - At this age she will be very physical and very oral - its a sensory immaturity so not something you can stop through punishment. She doesnt yet have impulse control - that part of her brain isnt online yet. Try saying kiss kiss and teach her to kiss gently. Teach her how to be gentle - take her hand and show her how to pat/stroke you as you say gentle. She may be finding biting feels good - especially if she is teething . Try giving more cool things to chew/bite on to help her gums - and offer this at times she is likely to bite .
