Munnariyippu Review: Must watch! The interesting aspect about Munnariyippu was that it worked in two different ways with two different kinds of viewers- those who saw the climax miles away and those who never saw it coming. I was a little surprised at the way the clues were spread across the film as if the director wanted only the least suspecting viewer to not take notice! For starters, who can ignore the fact that someone actually prefers being in jail to being out of jail! The premise of Munnariyippu and most other movies that belong to this genre is- We cannot really understand another person. (We barely understand ourselves!) Munnariyippu has excellent visual grammar, sadly most directors and cinematographers today have no clue what that is. It was technically very very good-the cinematography, editing, music, screenplay, sound. While he was technically perfect, Venu was a bit loose when it came to directing actors. It is in such movies that a good actor differentiates himself from the ones that need the elaborate handholding of a director who comes from an acting/theatre background. Mammootty was brilliant!! The cop in the beginning scene was terrible, Shaiju Kurup delivered a very loose performance. Prithviraj seemed to be mimicking himself playing the role. Script: The screenplay had a very good structure, almost retro Hollywood. It was like Sunset Boulevard, where you go into the world of a character. The only difference was that, in Munnariyippu, we briefly bring that character out of his world to ours. My main issue is with the directors/writers sensibilities- his taste and wit. The maker employs witty asides as a means to showcase his nuanced standpoint in life. But they appear tasteless cos either his nuanced standpoint is witty or he doesnt do it with real appreciation for the people he is quoting. The young female office attendant casually says He dumped me after he used me. I didnt want to commit suicide thinking about postmortem. This was an area excelled by G Aravindan (Cheriya Lokavum Valiya Manushyarum) and Padmarajan and recently in the state award winning film CRNo.89. They portray witty lines and funny characters but with understanding and more importantly affection.
