My Gotham Review: (Spoilers) What I loved: Most casting is spot on. McKenzie is a very believable young Jim Gordon. He is an idealist while still trying to function within a corrupt system. Logue is a great Bullock. He plays the cop that is jaded by the system and slightly bad but still a little bit of good in him. I thought the Carmine Falcone stuff came across at well executed. I was fearing someone playing an over the top mob boss and this actor portrayed him in a realistic manner. These actors should be able to carry the show for a while. The penguin stuff was okay. Its an original take on Penguin and I dont mind him him being 20 years older than Bruce. I didnt mind the sub plots with Barbara and Renee. It was a nice nod to the comics and makes those characters more 3 dimensional. Now for the stuff I hated: The worst part of the episode was Jada Pinkett Smith and her awful acting skills. I understand the producers thinking Jada was a big name movie actor and would lend credibility to the series, but she dragged it down. Every scene she was in seemed like she was portraying some over the top wannabe pretend gangster. I half expected her to start using some fake James Cagney accent and wearing a pin stripe suit. I cant tell if her dialogue was just that cliche and poorly written, or if she just acted it out that way. The next problem I had was TOO MANY EASTER EGGS!!!! First of all, catwoman is too old. Ive never seen a telling where Catwoman was this much older than batman. I wouldnt mind even showing her, if they kept it subtle. But she is pretty much in full on costume running around on rooftops and pick pocketing. She just happens to lurk outside Wayne Manor, Crime Alley, and every other significant story location at just the right time?!? Gotham is a city of over a million people, not some tiny town. This was too forced. Same with the Riddler. Is every Batman villain 20 years older than him!?! The Ivy reference was way too forced and IVY is only her criminal name! Her scene was okay, but I wish that they would have called her Pamela. Its Doctor Pamela Isley, not Ivy. Read a comic book people!! Hopefully that comedian is not supposed to end up as Joker, but the tease was obvious. I read the producers say they will tease different potential Jokers throughout the series, so I can live with that. Overall it worked. It didnt blow me away, but these shows usually take a few episodes to find their pacing. Its worth a whole season before I give up on it.
