My Grandmother, Alice Pearl Morris was 14 when the hurricane of 1928 hit WPB. They were not expecting such a bad storm and they stayed in the house her father built during the first part of the storm. During the eye, they (along with most of the town) moved into the ice house, the strongest building at the time. They were dirt poor and the only pet she had was a chicken. After the storm, she walked back to the house believing her home would be gone. Her home withstood the storm and under the steps was the chicken, alive and well.
