My Life as a teen part 2 In a way, my culture shock absorbed the earthquake so I was OK. I started playing banjo in the band Caroliner Rainbow, which is still together in SF now with its seven thousandth five hundredth members. My boyfriend at the time and all the band members were older than me and they showed me how to self produce records and comics and through them and my school I knew people to hook me up with free photocopies, distribution and mailing. I self published 2 issues of Meat Cake this way and started working as a freelance artist, by the time I was 21 I got a publishing deal with Fantagraphics to publish Meat Cake and then I moved to New York City to continue working as a freelance artist. When doing lectures or classes, I always say, where there is a will there is a way. If you want to do it, this is the sign that it is your destiny, and there is no such thing as failure. Academia and the arts are a way out of poverty or any compromising situation you just have to make your own key.
