My copies of SEASCAPE arrived this afternoon. Beautiful design by Katharine Bogden / Dont Look Now! & thanks to Matvei Yankelevich. My commentary on the 1985 poem is included an elegant insert. Heimrad Bäcker (1925-2003) was an Austrian poet associated with the Vienna Group and also concrete poetry. SEASCAPE situates itself on the ground of the shipwreck (du fond dun naufrage) in Mallarmé’s Un coup de dés, using as its source text a case from Nuremberg. It is part of a series of quasi-documentary works that collage or cut-up found texts, including Reznikoff, Rukeyser, Olson, Burroughs/Gysin, Susan Howe, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Åke Hodell. Indeed, the poem fits squarely in the company of works, such as [Jackson] Mac Low’s, of the 1950s to 1980s entirely derived from prior or found texts. The book is reviewed here by David Shook.
