My cousin wrote this below ! Seeking Help and prayers Please read Mallery is at the Dallas VA USMC - 3 tours in Vietnam, Silver Star recipient On July 5th 2014 my mother took my father Mallery Nachtrieb to a hospital in their town for severe abdominal pain. The thoughts at the time was that it might be appendicitis. The hospital performed a cat scan and discovered that he has a perforated bowel and abscess. Because he is a veteran he was told that ETMC could not treat him without V A approval and was shipped to the Dallas VA by ambulance. Upon his arrival at the VA we were told that surgery might be needed, however they were trying to treat him with antibiotic therapy. My dad was taken off of food and drink for 3 days to allow his intestines to heal. He was then allowed a liquid diet for one day and then provided a full diet with no restrictions and was released after 5 days of I V antibiotics. They did not attempt to drain the infection. After being home 6 days he was provided oral antibiotics. My mother was directed by Dallas V A to take him to the Tyler V A clinic and was told that if medical care in a hospital was needed that he could be admitted to UT Health Center in Tyler. Mother took my dad to the clinic and was told that he needed to be taken to ETMC Tyler for another C T. My dad was admitted to ETMC in Tyler and stayed there for 3 days being told that surgery of some sort was not an option. He was told that without the surgery there was a great chance that the abscess which had grown in size in his intestines would rupture causing massive infection that would lead to death. The VA informed my mother that he would have to be transferred back to Dallas because there is a bed available he has to be treated at the VA. She was also told if there was refusal to be transferred that she could pay out of pocket for his care. Due to the income and insurance he was transferred back to the VA. He has now been back at the VA pending relief of the abscess for 5 days. We were told that surgery would be done either Monday or today. After switching him from NPO ( no food or drink) every other day to prep for surgery, they have yet again pushed his surgery off again and are denying him the care that he needs. When we requested to know why surgery was delayed, they sent a student resident to try to answer our questions. Everything asked was answered with I will have to ask my attending, because I dont know. I know that if this is the type of care my father is receiving, there are many more being treated this way as well and not everyone has someone willing to stand up and be their voice. These men and women have served their country and deserve better care. projects.militarytimes/citations-medals-awards/recipient.php?recipientid=40864
