My daughters and I love prime rib. Our 3 year old can eat an 8 - TopicsExpress

My daughters and I love prime rib. Our 3 year old can eat an 8 ounce piece by herself! We are always happy to try a restaurant that serves one of our favorite dinners. Yet, when someone recommended Gilroy Bowl & Scottys Place I was a bit skeptical. Prime rib at a bowling alley?! Once we looked up Scottys I was even more surprised to learn they serve Japanese food too. Bowling and sushi - thats a new one! So, Friday evening we headed to downtown Gilroy to find the infamous bowling alley. It was easy to find and parking was not a problem. When we arrived I was surprised at how small the restaurant and attached bowling alley were. We were seated quickly. There were two large parties having dinner in the bar area and it was apparent the waitresses were overwhelmed. Even though she was very busy our waitress was very attentive and kind. Of course we ordered our beloved prime rib (which is only available on Friday and Saturday). The dinner included soup, salad, bread, veggies, choice of starch and dessert! Tons of food! We were given the option of two homemade soups: miso or clam chowder. The girls opted for miso and I had the chowder. Both soups were tasty. The miso had big chunks of tofu and lots of sliced green onion. The broth was mild and not overly salty. The clam chowder was delicious! It was thick and creamy. The clams were tender, the potatoes and celery added a nice bite, and the herbs were noticeable but not overpowering. The next course was our salads. Of course, I ordered both the blue cheese and ranch. They were equally good. They tasted freshly prepared and were the perfect consistency. The salad had canned beets on top, which we loved. I didnt try the bread, because I knew I would be too full. It looked like a soft Dutch crust loaf of French bread. Our dinners arrived and were served on huge plates. The prime rib was beautiful. I often find prime rib to be overly fatty. Not the case at Scottys! It was cooked exactly as ordered - medium rare. I thought the meat itself was bland, even around the edges. Living in Gilroy it definitely needed some garlic seasoning, as well as black pepper and salt. After adding pepper and salt, I found it to be perfectly tasty. It was tender and juicy. The au jus was rich and beefy. It was served with straight horseradish and it was hot. I mixed some into my au jus and it was just enough heat for me. The baked potato was an average potato served with sour cream and butter. The vegetables were fresh not frozen. There was a blend of zucchini, carrot and broccoli. The vegetables were not overcooked, but could have used a little more salt or butter. By now we were stuffed. Our waitress offered us our dessert, and I was ready to decline until she said they had homemade bread pudding. I couldnt pass it up. It was served hot with caramel sauce and whipped cream on top. I wouldnt necessarily call it a pudding as it resembled a slice of french toast, but it was incredible. It was chewy, buttery and tasted of cinnamon and cream. The other dessert options were vanilla ice cream or rainbow sherbet. I didnt try either. My son ordered the teriyaki chicken dinner plate. His chicken was a charbroiled breast topped with a flavorful teriyaki sauce. It was very tasty and affordable. His dinner also included steamed rice, but I only sampled the chicken. All the dinners at Scottys include soup, salad and dessert. Be sure to go hungry! The restaurant is reminiscent of a diner and is a bit outdated, but dont let the decor or location keep you from trying it. The staff was friendly, the portions were huge and the food was great. We even followed up our dinner by bowling for a bit. It was a fun family dinner and everyone left full and happy. Thank you Scottys for a wonderful dinner. We cant wait to try the breakfasts and lunch options - our waitress said everything is homemade!
