My day at St. Clair, PA. September 20, 2014. St Clair is well-known fossil fern locality of the Pennsylvanian Period (300 milion years ago, give or take). Very rarely, fossil insects and other critters are found in the shale as well. The most desired fossils are those with a coating of the white mineral that is unique to this area, the name of which I know but cant spell (Perhophyllite?). Anyway, my understanding is that these are the only fossils in the world that exhibit this characteristic. I have been to this spot several times before, but this time, I paid a reasonable fee to have my finds carted out. I took about 100 pounds out. Glad my wife is still in Korea so she didnt see me bringing in all these rocks. Shes ok with bugs, but rocks!
