My eyes, they were damp. I knew that it was only a matter of time - TopicsExpress

My eyes, they were damp. I knew that it was only a matter of time before these glistening optical organs will burst into tears. I don’t know if I am being overly emphatic but don’t tell me that you wouldn’t be saddened by the pleading of a daughter yearning for her mother who was boarding an airplane that went missing in the air to tell her that she was fine. ‘Mom, I know you’re there, I heard something bad happened to you…please come back and tell me that this isn’t true. Ma, Danial keep asking why everybody looked so sad and what happened to you, I can’t give him answer…Ma I love you so much’ texted a girl via her smartphone. People kept telling her to be strong, that everything will be alright but she know deep down...they did that so as to not want to make her be even more morose. In fact she was confident that they too did not believe their own utterances, not that they were being fake or hypocrite but they knew all too well that sometimes, when things are at its bleakest an unreal yet kind offering of words are the only means of comfort. When times are troublingly tough, bonds are tested. It is a time when deceitful hypocrisy and insincere façade are shed and discard, baring nothing but one’s true colours. For quite a while, Malaysians were throwing away their sensitivity towards others. Somehow, with technologies at our disposal, we tend to hurt other with the notion that we are not ‘fake’ and were just telling things in a straight forward manner. We have let political affiliations, economic woes and racial differences to divide us even further apart to the point of us becoming more and more insensitive with sensitivity. Thriving in multiracial country, we were told that it was a matter of time before the ticking time bomb of racial tension would explode, it did went off once but was swiftly dealt with. Foreign voices said that it should have been worse and that more racial furore would soon follow suit but in spite of the steady increment of such tension there were no bloody breakouts. After racial tensions have become a thing in the past, differing political affiliations were soon a critical issue. Party members were endlessly bickering with opposing party members. Scandalous speculations were flung. Every party believed that every sides were immensely corrupted. Be it mainstream, alternative or the social media, every single statement invited wicked doubts from the people. Everything was labelled as ‘lies’ to the point that it drove us all nearly insane in deciding which one to believe. Things were expected to worsen after the sentence of a particular trial was revealed, like usual, foreign ‘experts’ were all waiting for the second ‘time bomb’ to explode and just as it was on the verge of exploding…it didn’t. People’s attention were diverted by a simple yet tragic news. An airplane, carrying passengers, went missing without a trace. Suddenly, the bickering halted and people from all walks of religions and life were praying for fellow strangers. Only a small majority knew the passengers but being a true blue Malaysian at core, we never gave away our oriental selflessness. We may have thought that that we have cemented out hearts to be strong and solid but when great tragedy befalls another stranger, our hearts went back to its mellow state. Of course there were some idiotically ignorant ranting about how such unfortunate turn of event was carefully machinated so as to divert watchful eyes off a certain, unknowingly claimed, unjust sentencing. But, none were completely mad in politics enough to be falling for such accusations. “So explain to me, possibly in laymans term, what on earth has politics got to do with a plane crash? Please go to one corner and shut up!” said a girl, annoyed over the fact that such mishap was trying to be used as a political tool. I wouldn’t call it a silver lining but perhaps, this tragedy does have its merits. It made me realize that Malaysians are not as insensitive as I have thought they were. Alas, sure there were times where we made claims to be better off without each other but this tragedy has proven that should distress and duress occur all of us will always be there, praying for each other to safely return to the hot and humid land we proudly we call our homeland.
