My grandson asked me recently about the place called Futheyville. He had heard me mention it as the place where I had spent much of my young life one Sunday in a sermon. Well, I can easily locate Futheyville geographically. When I lived there it was a place bounded by Bogue Creek on the West, Highway 8 on the East, and the Yalobusha River on the North. Those directions are precise because Futheyville was triangular in shape, but the boundaries are fairly accurate. But to tell you about the location of Futheyville comes far short of describing it. You see, it is as much an idea as it is a place. Anyone who lived the Futheyville experience will understand that statement. For the rest, like my grandson, let me share some recollections that will help it come to life. When my family fist moved to Futheyville, it was much different from today. At that time there were only two roads: one came across Bogue Creek by way of an old suspension bridge which has since collapsed, passed by the Store and exited at Highway 8 where there had been a beer joint before beer was banned in the county; the other cam down the hill from Highway 8, crossed the main road at the Store, and continued all the way to near the Yalobusha River south of where the current Grenada Dam is located. The Store had three notable features: a modified service station, a watering trough, and an artesian well. These features made it the gathering place for the community. The mail for the homes in the area was left there for folks to collect and it was the only place for folks without transportation buy essentials without having to walk into town across Bogue Creek. Both of the roads through the village were gravel; the only house in the area with indoor plumbing belong to Mrs. Spence. The people who inhabited the place were farmers, Hosiery Mill workers, and other low income folks. There was no church and no school. There was, however, a strong sense of community unlike any I have experienced in all the places I have lived since leaving there. More later.....
