My kids wonder why we have to spend so much time working through how to properly write and analyze argumentative writing. Its difficult at times to understand, isnt particularly fun all the time, and we often to it wrong in the early stages of learning it. But the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack reminds me why we spend so much time preparing our students how to argue in the language of academia. I can only hope that the next generation will be one that can discuss differences and prove claims through argument, debate, and evidence as opposed to terror, extremism, and bullets.
