My latest. The ‘marketization’ of education is the cancellation of the very concept of education. Rather than being the place where the pursuit of knowledge is prioritized, we’re ‘educating’ – read: numbing – people into selling themselves, their skills, their knowledge. To sell (and, of course, to buy) has become an end in itself, creating a never-ending consumerist madness. The reason I use ‘we’ without even being in the same continent as Mr Grimm is that his situation is far from being unique to the UK. Everywhere you go, you’ll find students being told, sometimes by fellow students, that they should start seeing themselves as a brand, subject to the man-made laws of the man-made market, the closest thing mankind has created to an actual deity. They’re told that they should increasingly rely on the benevolence of a foreign agent and an outdated bureaucratic hierarchy designed by the few to serve the few. I don’t want to linger on this for too long as I believe that all that needs to be written about Stefan Grimm was written in the aforementioned links. I’ll end with a tweet I sent to David Graeber, who initially shared the story: “teachers committing suicide should be one of the clearest examples of a failed society.”
