My loves, Im so sorry. Revolution isnt bloodless. It never has been. Good people, innocent people, helpers and medics and caretakers and women and children and beautiful young men, glorious souls and artists and musicians, daughters and sons, are going to bleed tonight. Most of them will be brown. Some of them will be white. Some of them think they have no horse in this race. Each of them will bleed the same red in the same revolution on the same streets for the same cause. Im at home, sitting on my bed, alone. Im sitting, watching Kill la Kill, checking up on the news periodically. And while I sit here with nothing I can really do, I #standwithferguson in an absolute, staunch, unwavering sense, because we will absolutely lose this revolution if we lose sight of the core that #blacklivesmatter and #blackbodiesmatter and revolutions are fed on blood and bloody mindedness. Its not that the ends justify the means -- its that the initial violence and oppression NECESSITATED the means. When black children dont get free passage and immunity from the dangers of a racist colonial system, that free passage and immunity cant be offered to the firefighters, doctors, or even civilians engulfed in the revolution. At least rescue teams pledged their lives to these responsibilities. Fire isnt your only calling, Michael Ross -- another is dealing with panicked people in the midst of the fire. And this is one hell of an inferno. The pledge is to serve and protect, not to get incensed at those in your charge. I may not like some of the things happening right now -- looting, shooting, fires, violence, outrage, miscarriage of justice, mourning, pain, loss. In fact, I dont like any of it. I dont like how it started. I dont like what its led to. Nobody wants a revolution because revolution is predicated by tragedy. But I stand with Ferguson. Arguing for a clean cut revolution detracts from the point. I stand with Ferguson. This revolution couldnt be clean. The system made that so, not the protestors. I stand with Ferguson. We could make statements about not seeking blood, but the first blood came from children, drawn by the system itself. I stand with Ferguson. Sometimes, self defense is necessary. Sometimes, self defense means blood. Sometimes, the blood of a nation means the lives of the innocent. You think I accept that lightly? The fall of irreplaceable ephemeral human beings in all their brilliant chaotic glory? No. But I stand with Ferguson. I can critique the approach, I can critique the revolution, I can critique the people, I can critique the effects their actions might or might not have, but to do so is to lose my own purpose. I stand with Ferguson. There will be blood. All night. And I celebrate none of it. Regardless, I stand with Ferguson. May our children one day be safe.
