My metabolism appears to have accelerated quite a lot due to experiments with reverse dieting, so much so that eating 2900 calories per day constitutes going on a hardcore weight loss diet, and eating 3500 calories per day for weeks produced disappointing muscle gain. The way I have been doing it is like this: ever since my goal switched to adding lean, fat free muscle, I started to design my workout plans in 12 week cycles, taking the 13th week off all exercise to allow my nerves and joints to heal. Whatever daily calorie level I finish the 12 week cycle at I drop by 600 for my one week off. Then, the first week of the next workout cycle, I increase my daily calories by 250. Then I increase it by 100 per week for 2 more weeks, then 50 per week for 4-5 weeks depending on my results, stopping at a calorie level that is 50 to 100 calories higher than the highest point on the last cycle, at which level I hold steady for a few weeks, intending to maintain a slight caloric surplus to allow for lean muscle gain. The objective in doing this is to gain muscle incrementally while minimizing fat gains and maintaining a six pack. My week off is considered a diet week that is intended to burn off the minimal fat I might have gained while eating at a surplus to gain muscle. Some people question why I monitor my eating so meticulously, but, then again, Im in my mid-30s, weighing in the 150s range while closing in on a 3x bodyweight deadlift, and my metabolism is now so fast that, if I need to lose weight for any reason, I can do so on amounts of food that would make much larger men my age gain weight.
