My motivation for today comes from this little girl right here. Kaylee Mae. Thanks to her mom for letting me share her story. As we speak, Kaylee and her family are headed to KC for a very intensive spinal surgery, which comes just a few short months after a life changing back surgery in September. As long as Ive known Kaylee, she has always lit up the room when she walked in. She has this quiet and shy personality that just opens up once she gets excited about something. I even remember her calling Dawson Grimsley a pickle head during a commercial shoot when he was getting his lines wrong!! I met Kaylee and her mom, Meisha when I first started working at MDA. I remember learning that Meisha made the decision to go back to school to be a nurse because she wanted to understand what her daughter was going through and to be able to care for her as she progressed throughout her disease. I immediately became inspired by this woman who was on a mission to do the best she could for her family. If you see Kaylee coming down the street, you may not be aware of the challenges she faces day to day. But if you look a little closer, you realize she has AFOs and now a leg brace to help with her spine alignment and that does slow her down a bit. However, this little girl puts on a bigger smile than most of us do without any daily challenges! Ill never forget when I was at a NALC meeting with Meisha and Kaylee and I listened as Meisha talked about their life with MD. She talked about how the diagnosis and how much time they said Kaylee had. Kaylee had a birthday coming up and for Meisha, she celebrates with cake and a traditional birthday but inside, that day marks another year closer to the time Doctors gave her. Today, as Kaylee preps for another invasive, tolling spinal surgery, I ask that you say a prayer for her and her family and then do what you can with those muscles of yours! Be thankful for a healthy body! Meisha has a page set up to follow Kaylee and her progress. Ill post it in the comments below.
