My neighbor, a coal miner, stopped by yesterday to confirm what I had suspected, that the big mountain top removal mines that surround our houses were being shut down. The miners received their lay off notices in the mail on Wednesday. We had a long talk. For the last ten years my place has been known by everyone as the Treehugger House, as in You turn left just before the Treehugger House, and during past layoffs we would get a lot of angry miners driving by, honking, hollering and sometimes throwing rocks. But not this time. He knows Ive spent a decade trying to put him out of work but he does not blame us treehuggers. The irony is that I was preparing to tress pass onto to the mine site when we got the news that Alpha was shutting down 12 of the MTR mines they bought from Massey. Now we are both looking for a job...
