My newsfeed of late has been nothing but videos of people dousing themselves in ice water in the name of “ALS awareness”. What good does that do? So I did a little research. Pete Frates, of Beverly, Mass., who has had ALS since 2012, started this challenge before it became a viral hit. The point is to raise awareness and charity. Sure, it may be viral or a fad, but donations have increased tenfold according to the ALS foundation. If I nominate 3 more people the chances that there will be someone else who will educate him or herself about this disease and choose to donate will increase exponentially, just as I did. The important thing to remember is that this challenge is about awareness for a devastating disease for which we have no treatment and still no clue what causes it.
