My rant for today: How to Run a Nation like Triad. (warning harsh words) I beg to differ: Malaysia is not divided by racial politics (not the whole picture). It is more akin to what Sukarno described as neo-colonialist hangover. It is more of a feudal politics + Edwardian-type class division + triad mentality. More than 64 years ago, during colonial period; the elite Malays get of government administrative post, the elite Chinese are the suppliers/traders and the Indians are in the mandores. Today our problem come from these are the pigeon-hole stereotype leftovers from 64 years ago before the independence. Now we are getting to understand the problem. Class system. The elites of these groups got hold of everything. Today, the ruling elite Malay Nobility, the Chinese merchant and the Indian plantation mandores of yesteryears are now the Malay-Umno elites and senior government officers, the billionaire Chinese tycoon and the Indian triad-politicos kingpin. They from the very beginning have divided the sphere of influence and power in this nation and signed a pact of mutual understanding and benefit. Please understand; They have turf to protect. So like any other territorial animals, patronage system is the rule of the day. Not only the other gang encroachment into their traditional turf is a big concern but the establishment of hierarchy within the gang is also very important. Today it is the godfather that you know that is most important, in order to secure positions and not your capability. Malaysia is a heaven for apple-polishers and back-stabbers. Political leaders and public administrators tend to promote people who they think will help to prolong or enhance their own position and castrate those who have potential to displace them. It is fine if it is for the selection of political appointees or (being blunt) triad lieutenant. Using such a feudal-mafioso-chistic method for government administrative dealings is self-defeating and suicidal for a nation. Over the generations this process of choosing a weaker heir produced the today batch of weak-hearted, self-serving, integrity-lacking administrators that are more cosmetic than dynamic in capability and composition. Dont be surprise if they only answer to their political godfather not the tax-paying public. Let me clarify their meaning of tax-paying public: sorry it does not mean anything to them (most from their vote-banks dont pay taxes, only need to run errands). These triad lieutenant will do their master bidding in complete disregard of rules/procedures, handing out gift to strengthen their Godfather status. The recent giving out of the handouts are an act nurturing dependency thus being subservient is a requirement. It is something like pusher drug-addicts relationship. Thus this is how things work here. The proof of the pudding is in the eating.
