My teaching buddies and I have about 45 years of combined teaching experience in the primary grades and this was definitely a first for all of us today. We have been studying life cycles for the past few weeks and our students have been observing their caterpillars transform magically into beautiful butterflies right before their very eyes. Today, my buddy gathered her students in a circle on the playground to cheer on their beloved class pets as they were released into the big world.. One butterfly flew out of its garden and then another. But when the third one started to fly away, a bird swooped by and ate it right in front of them! Horrified shrieks filled the air! The fourth butterfly fluttered away to safety, but the fifth and slowest one... was also swooped upon by the same bird, who then proudly sat on the fence next to the class and chowed down. So, I guess thats the end of those life cycles, huh, Mrs. H.. observed one 7 year old girl. Yep. Life cycle lessons segued into a food chain lesson. Grief counselors are on standby ;)
