My time in the military was uneventful. Although the Vietnam war - TopicsExpress

My time in the military was uneventful. Although the Vietnam war was going on, I was sent to Germany. A few scares: The Red Army was bombing Army barracks as was the Baeder-Meinhoff gang. I came home okay, but many of my brothers who served in Asia did not. In college, I joined the Vietnam Veterans Against the War. At the time, the VA was cutting benefits for all vets, including medical and education. We organized a tent city on campus, which we held for six weeks. I was their director of communications. We managed to have a sit down with the head of the VA, Donald Johnson, and pushed our demands to respect the sacrifices of our Vietnam vets. We also were visited by Ron Kovic, who was leading the nationwide effort for Vietnam vets. At the end, the VA agreed to increase benefits. It was the impetus of what they called the new G.I. Bill. But our vets are still underserved. Even after the sacrifices in Iraq, Kuwait, Afghanistan, and other war zones. No matter your views on American foreign engagement, the men and women who have served deserve our continued respect and admiration. No more homeless vets. No more unemployed vets. No more mentally ill vets who cant find the services they need. Props to my son Michael who served in the Middle East, my son Cristofer who is active duty and has served two tours as well. My in-laws Lou, Ray and Pat, who served. My friends. My brothers and sisters. Enjoy your Veterans Day and stay strong.
