#MyMother 3 A PROTECTION One day mom walked into the house from work. Her face was sad. Mum wasnt one to carry a long face about. That evening, I think she cried. Some crooked excuses for human beings had run several fast shady schemes that made the company she worked in several million Naira poorer. Mom knew those who did it but she never reported. Till date, I dont know why. And when the headquarters of the multinational ordered a downsizing, mom and a few others were summarily dismissed. For something that she didnt do. Things took a turn for the worse. There were days when we all [my brothers and I] gathered to eat a cup of garri mixed with palm oil and then drink water, thank God for the meal and then go to sleep. That was food for a whole day. Not once do I remember going out to beg food to eat. Whatever we had, we ate and thanked God. In fact, till date, I dont eat outside, only very rarely. I could have started then, but mom made sure we held up, even in the worst conditions. It wasnt the end of the world, she would say. Dad had been a top level executive in a bank and mom, mid-level in a high-paying multinational. So we had been quite used to a comfortable life. Now, imagine the plunge. Whatever money we had, went towards paying hospital bills. One of our house-helps got Type 2 Diabetes. Her hospital bills also took a huge chunk of whatever health insurance mom had. Every valuable, mom sold. She got several other jobs, none enough to quite meet up. In the middle of all of these, we were eventually tossed out of the house and, because we were ill prepared, we were separated, and began living with three different families. I dont know how mom did it, but she somehow still managed to instill dignity in us. She protected us from whatever negative effects this could have brought. She protected us from abuse. She protected us from the talk. She protected us from the side effects of a scattered family. In this generation of fast food girls, I have come to appreciate her more. If you must marry, marry a woman that can bring protection. For you, for your home, for your family, for your kids. I love my mum. …I VALue You AKPOVETA, Valentine ‘t |EffectivenessCOACH @iam_avt BB PIN: 76A8BFDD BB Channel PIN: C00214C5D
