NAME: (IRISH) ARLENE PEREZ-CABALUNA PROFESSOR: PROF. CEASAR BILLONES REFLECTION: “CENTESIMUS ANNUS” (One Hundredth Year) Written in 1991 by Pope John Paul II, the Encyclical Letter, Centesimus Annus, which literally means, one hundredth year, commemorates the one hundredth year anniversary of Rerum Novarum… This encyclical proposes us, to have a re-reading of the Rerum Novarum…to refresh our minds with the fundamental principles underlying it…with regards to the issue of the contemporary social, economic, and political problems, that arises every now and then, in different forms and manner, depending on the signs of the times…while moving the church social teaching in a new direction. The encyclical, integrates the social teachings of the church, with the scripture, as well as with the teachings of the Popes, as it shows a single unifying theme, that holds the church’s social teaching together; “the dignity of Human person”, as created in the “image and likeness of God”…and applying this notion of the human dignity, to the social questions of the present time… This era, marks the fall of the Berlin wall, and the collapsed of the Soviet Union…hence; it is this death of communistic socialism, that Pope John Paul II wrote a chapter-long reflection, and includes it in Centesimus Annus… The Catholic Social Teaching therefore, changes its backdrop…adopting the proposal for a freer society… a new framework, that responds to the current questions, being raise at the moment…that requires an answer, of our need for a free culture, a free market, and a free polity. These three part-models of a free society are grounded, not just in the encyclicals, but in the Holy Scriptures as well. John Paul II claims, that the society, has the obligations, to protect rights and provide jobs…it also has the task, of overseeing the full exercise of Human rights…but it cannot do so, without the help of the individuals, and of different social groups and associations which comprises the society as well. Centesimus Annus also speaks with a new voice…it is a voice that reflects, the dignity of the human person, that proceeds to authentic freedom…a freedom of choice on how to respond to their vocation and to return to God…a freedom, that demands universal respect, that each person owes to each other. Centesimus Annus also stress, that the key to a freer society is culture…a culture that promotes the dignity of human life…
