NASA’s LADEE spacecraft ended its mission to analyze the moons - TopicsExpress

NASA’s LADEE spacecraft ended its mission to analyze the moons atmosphere early last Friday when it successfully crashed into the lunar surface. The Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer was commissioned by NASA and built at Ames Research Center in California. The spacecraft’s primary mission was only scheduled to last 100 days but in that time collected an impressive amount of scientific data regarding the nature of the moons atmosphere. The atmosphere is so thin that the atoms it’s comprised of never collide with one another. LADEE also successfully demonstrated an innovative laser communications terminal that is capable of transmitting data at much higher rates than current communication systems. This system could significantly reduce communication delays and increase transmission rates for future deep space missions.
