NOBODY FIELDING It have two games in this music town...Soca and Not Soca. Now this is not really a Genre or Type categorization. is a Time context. Follow me. Now within that definition (reality) Soca is the music that Record Labels/Artists/Producers make specifically for one single season. The only season. Not summer spring fall...but for Carnival. A season defined by an annual street event. Hence Chutney (which used to have a vibrant off season life before the big prizes came in) Calypso, Rapso (I not getting in dat) are recorded and released not staggered over days/weeks/months of any given year...it is ALL put out more or less at the same time. Up the Islands Soca of course is released to time with their festivals...But is generally not a Real Time synchronicity...There is an entire business that sets up camp waiting for the arrival of this shipload of Socas. Radio, Fete Promoter, Mas Folk, Vendors, Crooks, Politicians....all pitch tents like in one a dem farm fair and engage in commerce..It is a very good business for some...not so good for others and when the last bell is rung..the tents get pulled down and packed away till the following year... Now the Not Soca is basically a similar group of creators but are distinguished by their rejection of the Festival construct of recording and release.(some not all out...but most with having a non carnival preference/model/sensibility). Now these dudes range from Hard Rockers to Reggae Dancehall Hip Hop heads, to Crossover Experimental, to EDM...basically all kinda ting...releasing in a more natural sequence, those who record put stuff up online, some shape their sound to whatever is the flavour of the month at urban import radio (who transform alongside the rest of the fair ground to a strong link in the chain of the local music process but switch back to foreign first for most of the rest of the year). Some actually get some spins. Some get some bookings, But essentially the entire Industry shuts down for months at a time. Is like you in Detroit, in its Automobile City hey day...And your factory makes the fenders for the assembly plant...And the main plant shuts down for no other reason than a Catholic tradition. Is like a cricket match with only bowlers. Now batsmen no fielders, no wicket keeper and no lights in the stands...There is nobody to bat or catch what you bowl...no matter how good your spin is. #ozymerrique #truemember #glavanizeclub
