This was the type of garment worn by funeral directors prior to World War I. William J. Quinn founded this funeral home in 1876. The date is most likely incorrect as J. Frank Lynch is listed in the Troy City Directory up through 1887. He first appears in the Erie City Directory in 1891 as a cutter. [Coat hanger from J. Frank Lynchs tailor shop. The season of 1923 finds the establishment of J. Frank Lynch firmly imbedded in the minds and patronage of that portion of Eries men folk who have called upon our workmanship and materials and have received not only what they asked but that higher type of service that goes hand-in-hand with the Master Craftsmans work. It has never been the policy of this establishment to render just GOOD service, but always we have asked ourselves the question - “HAVE WE GIVEN THE VERY UTMOST POSSIBLE?” To be well dressed is not just a desire to be proper, It is an asset and a duty we owe to ourselves. From the Troy Historical Society: Mary Louisa Cassidy married John Francis Lynch on March 10, 1884. Ellen Cassidy is listed as the witness. This differs from the bible entry and the Troy, New York newspaper clipping, both of which have the April 25, 1883 date. However, the newspaper clipping was published on March 23, 1884, making it possible that there was an issue associated with their marriage.
