Nairobi City County Government has launched a pageant which will provide contestants with opportunities to be attached in local companies and offer training opportunities in the work place. The pageant, Miss Tourism Nairobi County, targets over 3,000 female contestants aged between 21 and 28 years. The event is also aimed at selling Nairobi as a major tourist destination boasting a wide range of attractions including The Nairobi National Park and National Museums. The winner will be the brand ambassador of Nairobi’s vibrant tourism product. “The two months exercise is part of Nairobi City County Government’s efforts to promote sustainable tourism activities in the County,” said Annah Othoro County Executive Committee Member-Trade, Industry, Co-operative Development and Tourism. “Contestants will be attached to companies where they will be expected to participate in the companies forums to socialize as well as add value to the forums in terms of ideas, discussions and labour output,” Ms Othoro added that during these attachments, the winner will be evaluated on the basis of their intelligence, general knowledge, flexibility, networking skills, leadership and teamwork. Only 17 contestants will make it to the semi-finals during which they will be expected to undertake social projects within Nairobi. They will further be expected to host a dinner that will bring together private sector leaders, foreign investors, civil society, the business community and religious leaders to promote Nairobi. During the event outgoing Miss Tourism Eva Wagaki handed over her crown. The event was attended by Catherine Mueke, Deputy first lady and the Executive Director Mrs Kamunge.
