Namaste from India! swaYYam is a not for profit initiative that practices, promotes and supports low-impact-living. We are working on models of natural buildings for marginal farmers in South of India. While Earth buildings are the way we want to go, weve been deliberating a lot on a few key aspects - to avoid cement or/and lime AND how to address the termite factor in our choice of building materials. Although straw is not easy to get or is cheap (we have millions of cattle to feed) we do have coconut fibre/coir that can be as effective as straw. The one big constraint in all our planning has been what do we do to keep the termites away from eating this up.. While termites are wonderful on the land helping breakdown biomass into rich soil nutrients they arent welcome in the walls, floors and roofs of earth buildings. We will be grateful for any inputs from experts on this forum.
