Nate Kenyon wins Southeast Regional Country Showdown Posted by Staff Writer in Headlines, News Wednesday, November 26. 2014 Comments (0) SPIRIT OF THE SUWANNEE MUSIC PARK & CAMPGROUND, LIVE OAK, FLA. – The best of the best country singers from eight states sang their hearts out Saturday night, Nov. 22, at The Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park & Campground (SOSMPC) in Live Oak, Fla. where Florida’s winner, Nate Kenyon, 24, went home with the crystal, engraved trophy! Nate, who lives in Baxley, Ga., gets to live the dream of thousands of country star wannabes…he will perform on the Grand Ole Opry Stage in Nashville, Tennessee Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015, to vie for the prize of $100,000 and to be named the Best New Artist in Country Music! Kenyon receives an all expense paid trip to Nashville as part of his win. Several of Kenyon’s mentors who, having realized early on his potential to become a country music star, have worked with him for some time now. Kells Rivers Faulkner, general manager of WAAC FM in Valdosta, Ga. said she realized his potential immediately when she met him several years ago. “We could not be more proud! Of all the years we’ve been in radio, this young man has what it takes to entertain and remain humble,” Faulkner stated. Through the efforts of Faulkner and others, Kenyon has already opened for the Lacs and become involved musically with many of Nashville’s country greats. Kenyon will compete against four other national winners at the national finals Jan. 21, 2015 on the Grand Ole Opry Stage. Kenyon won the WAAC sponsored South Georgia Country Showdown that led to him being placed in the closest state contest, the Florida State Country Showdown final. Dave Stone, aka Kraken, the diver with the Dreadknots on the History Channel’s Ax Men TV series, was thrilled to be in the audience to see his friend, who he has been mentoring for some time, win the regional. Kracken, who flew in from Las Vegas just in time for the show, said Kenyon has awesome talent and a bright future. Some of the other six contestants Nov. 22 admitted that after hearing Kenyon during practice the afternoon before the semi-finals, they thought he would be the winner! All congratulated Kenyon joyously, and he received hug after hug from the contestants, all who had hoped to be in his place. Kenyon, a young man who searched for his place in the music world for years, wrote a song about a year ago that made him understand that country was his music genre. That day changed everything for Kenyon. He moved back home to Baxley from Statesboro, Ga “The next day I quit my job and moved home to Baxley with my family,” Kenyon said in an earlier interview. “I wrote an album, cut it with Ben Wells with eight songs and never looked back.” Since that day Kenyon has made his living entertaining and writing music. Asked if he’s off Cloud 9 yet, Kenyon said Monday, “I’m up to about Cloud 15 right now! I am very blessed!” He added that as a Christian, he’s very blessed to have a mother who has an extremely strong faith, as well as other family members and that prayers have definitely played a big part in his success. “The reason things are going this way for me is that I’ve had a good support system, good advise, and I appreciate it all.” Kenyon said he’s thrilled to win the regionals, but if he had not, he would have been ok with it. “Everyone performing at that stage were just amazing, and I would not have been upset as the talent this point is so good,” he commented. Now, Kenyon is getting ready for his big moment on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry! Other state winners competing and radio stations they represent were Kendra Hope (North Carolina/South Carolina winner (WKVS), Hunter Girl (Tennessee winner – WCDT), Sweet Tea Trio (Alabama winner – WGOP), Luk Nichols (Kentucky winner – WKDZ/WHVO ), Skyelor Anderson (Arkansas winner – WEBL/AM) and Krissy Winstead (Mississippi winner – WCKK ). The SOSMPC hosted the SE Regional Country Showdown semi-final for the first time this year. The SOSMPC has hosted the North Florida WQHL 98.11 contest for many years. WQHL 98.1 of Live Oak, Fla. Mornin’ Ride Mornin’ Host Stevie D was the emcee for the Regional semi-finals. The Shane Givens Band of Alabama was the backup band.
