National Small Business Week: NWBC Recognizes Women’s Economic Impact Every year since 1963, the U.S. Small Business Administration honors our nation’s entrepreneurs and small business owners through its annual National Small Business Week. This year’s National Small Business Week will be held May 12th-May 16th. Throughout the week SBA and partners will highlight America’s outstanding entrepreneurs and small business owners through a multi-city tour. The National Women’s Business Council (NWBC) released the following statement commemorating National Small Business Week: “Our nation’s entrepreneurs and small business owners are a driving force in spurring economic growth. We now know 2 out-of-every 3 jobs are created by small business. The small business sector has led the way out of the recent recession and the current uptick in today’s rapidly growing start-up culture is proof that our nation’s entrepreneurial spirit has been reignited,” said NWBC Chair Carla Harris. “As we recognize National Small Business Week it is important to acknowledge the significant economic impact made by women entrepreneurs. As it stands, women entrepreneurs are the fastest growing segment in the small business community, with more than 8.9 million women-owned businesses in the US, employing 7.8 million people nationwide. Our recent study shows that 58% of women business owners surveyed increased their number of employees by 30% or more from 2008 to 2011, adding much needed jobs to the economy during the economic recession and significantly impacting economic growth.”
