Natural Gas Customers Facing Possible Price Hikes (SPRINGFIELD, Mass.) (WGGB)–With Labor Day fast approaching we’ll soon be thinking about those winter heating bills and some are predicting higher prices for natural gas customers. Some at the state level are predicting higher home heating costs. On Tuesday, Massachusetts Secretary of Environment and Energy Affairs Maeve Vallely Bartlett said it was going to be an expensive winter due to our constrained natural gas supply and last year’s extreme winter. Meanwhile Andrea Luppi, a spokesperson for Columbia Gas in Massachusetts says they won’t know for sure until at least mid October what customers may be paying for natural gas,”It’s a little too early for us to accurately predict what the winter gas prices might be, our indication at this time is that prices for gas seem to be holding steady, reflecting a similar price to what customers saw at the end of last winter.” Among the factors that will reflect any price hike in natural gas include weather conditions, pipeline constraints which are dependent on demands. More people are converting to natural gas which puts a strain on the pipeline. Last year along for example, Columbia Gas says 5,650 customers switched to natural gas.
