New Horizons Fall News Letter Dear Members of the New Horizons, I hope you are having a great summer and have enjoyed a little bit of a break from rehearsals and performances and that you have spent time with family and friends. We are getting ready to embark on a new adventure with the New Horizons groups with many exciting new changes. The first big change will be that we will have a permanent location and rehearsal space down at Johnson Elementary here in Lexington. For those who don’t know where it is located at 123 E 6th street. There is a great Donut and coffee place on the corner! We will share the bottom floor with the UK Opera Department and with the ACE program. Our dedicated space will be room 18, a very large class room that can be used for storage, library, desk, and small rehearsal group space. We also have the use of the Cafeteria which we will use just like over at SCAPA. Fayette County Schools has been busy working on this building , renovating it and it is really taking shape. Also, there is plenty of parking , no steps, restrooms close by in the hall , and lots of light! In addition to our new space we will have a new assistant Director (graduate student) Ms Ann Herrington, clarinetist, who will oversee the space, library and assist the directors. Ann comes to us from the University of Southern Mississippi, (same as Greg and John) plays a mean clarinet, and is an excellent teacher. When you see Ann please give her a warm welcome!! Next year we will also see new changes in Jazz Band Director as well as concert band Directors. Due to Dr. Joe Carrucci’s increased responsibilities at Lincoln University he has decided to step down from directing the JB. We will miss Joe! However, we are picking up Professor Brad Kerns, trombone professor and Jazz Band Director extrordinaire here at UK! In addition to Professor Kerns , Dr. Michael Hudson Assistant Professor of Music Education here at UK will share the CB Podium with Christine Carruci. Michael comes from Florida and has just finished his first year of teaching here at UK. Michael is also a wonderful trombone player and an excellent musician and teacher. Please give each of these folks a warm welcome. We are so lucky to have them as part of our NH family. Finally, our last and probably most important change will be “experimental” and that is we will be changing our days and times for rehearsal. By changing times we accomplish several goals. 1. Those folks who play in both the JB and the CB can do both without fear of becoming overly tired. 2. I can have more student help teaching beginners from the university when it is not on Saturday morning. This was an area that needed a lot of attention and is an important part of the New Horizon’s mission. 3. We share the space but we can control the space such that if folks eventually want to reserve a time to rehease in the space they can do so. These are the top reasons in my mind to move our rehearsal time off of Saturday morning, although there are many others. The suggested times for the groups are: Jazz Band MONDAY 5 – 6 Concert Band TUESDAY 6:30 – 800. Please note that we have purposely stayed away from Wednesday and Thursday because of various church commitments and and CKBC. I realize that many of you are very busy and committed to these activities. Mark your Calandars!! Our first Rehearsal with the Jazz Band is : Mon. Sept 9 5-6 JES Our first rehearsal with the Concert Band is: Tue. Sept 10 6:30-8 JES Strings will probably continue to rehearse on Saturday morning for an hour over at Johnson Elementary but later in the morning 10 or 11. A separate announcement will be going out to those folks! This is going to be an interesting year and as I said on the outset , a new adventure. We have some wonderful things happening with New Horizons and a good possibility of growth as musicians and as friends! I ask you only to go with the flow, be flexible, and continue to enjoy making music. And new friends! Sincerely, Dr. David Sogin Director of New Horizons University of Kentucky
