A brand new version of Petula Clark’s classic hit ‘Downtown’s lyrics have been reworked for a famous gay village in the UK. Manchester’s Lesbian and Gay Chorus will be premiering the song, ‘Canal Street’, at their performance at the end of March to celebrate Mothering Sunday. You can listen to the song here before the official debut. Steve Green, of Manchester’s Lesbian and Gay Chorus, said: ‘Our wonderful choral master Laurence Kaye has developed our own version of the Petula Clark classic “Downtown” and it’s been retitled “Canal Street”. ‘We’re sure the revised lyrics will bring a smile to everyone’s face.’ Along with ‘Canal Street’, the 78-person will be performing songs from ‘I Know Him So Well’ to ‘Somewhere’ alongside special guests Liverpool’s LGBT Choir. ‘The choir has been working really hard to ensure that the show is going to be an upbeat, entertaining and energetic performance,’ Green said. ‘We really encourage everyone to come down for a fun afternoon and to bring along their mums or the mother figures in their lives too, to celebrate love, tolerance and performance.’ Spring Into Harmony will take place at Salford’s Lowry Theatre on 30 March.
