New to the Project Rebirth community? #RebirthFYI overview about Our Film, Our Partners & Our Programs: 9/11 was a day no one can forget – a day of sadness and loss. For some, the losses suffered were more than anyone could imagine—the sudden and unexpected death of family members, friends, co-workers —almost 3,000 people from 90 countries. Others suffered serious injury or lasting trauma. It’s hard to imagine how people get through such tragic loss yet most of the time people do. How does that happen? Where do people find the strength? And what lessons can we learn from those who have had to go through it? Project Rebirths Peabody Award winning film, #REBIRTH, tells that story in a remarkable and inspiring way. Rebirth records the journeys of five people whose lives were forever altered on September 11, 2001, as their initial emotions of shock, anger, and confusion gradually evolve into hope, purpose, and renewal. Their stories of resiliency and recovery from grief, loss, and trauma comprise the unique message of the film. Through their willingness to share their stories of recovery, they teach us that tragedy need not consume our lives forever. We learn from them, and in so doing, we emerge teachers ourselves, ready to help others cope with the difficult events in their own lives. Simultaneously, the film tracks, with time-lapse photography, the redevelopment of Ground Zero in New York City. The result is a weaving together of two remarkable and parallel stories into an extraordinary film experience. Since 2006, Project Rebirth has worked with Pace University, Georgetown and Columbia University to use our film content to educate audiences about 9/11, and to better prepare first responders and community leaders to deal with grief, injury and traumatic loss. Project Rebirth programs are presently used by the NYPD, the Arlington County Fire Department , the USO, Ride2Recovery, the Kansas National Guard and the U.S. Army, among others. Our programs are designed to be both adaptable and easy to scale while ensuring the core elements necessary for personal and community growth in resilience remain both effective and relevant. Project Rebirth also continues to pilot programs to support 9/11 education initiatives in secondary schools and community education settings. We are honored to work with active-duty and returning Military, including a special program for women Veterans in collaboration with Ride 2 Recovery , and a program for Soldiers and Veterans in association with The Sierra Club and Outward Bound. Other partnerships with the United Service Organization (USO), Service Corporation International (SCI), Vinfen, and the Soaring Spirits Loss Foundation have allowed us to provide resiliency education for the medical community, grief professionals and caregivers. We are now developing a Rebirth based curriculum for Camp Esteem, a summer camp for at risk minority youth that is run by 100 Black Men Of America, Inc. Virginia Peninsula Chapter, as well as a Veterans program in collaboration with the Sierra Club, Outward Bound, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Georgetown University. Project Rebirth experts supported the families at Sandy Hook Elementary School and the community of Newtown, CT. Our team participated in critical rebuilding initiatives with H.E.A.R.T. 9/11 in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Rebirth has also been shown to audiences across the United States, Japan, Italy, and Australia; demonstrating that the process of overcoming grief is universal, and lessons can be learned from sharing our journeys toward recovery. Rebirth at Ground Zero serves as a centerpiece exhibit at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. Combining our extensive time-lapse film archive with audio clips and a haunting score by noted composer Philip Glass, the immersive installation is a panoramic visual experience that aims to inspire all future visitors to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. In addition to the immersive exhibition experience, Project Rebirth has produced nine short films about each of people interviewed by Project Rebirth over the course of nine years. These will also be featured at the museum. This content is appropriate and beneficial for all ages. School groups will be invited to attend, and educational workshops will be provided on site or virtually.
