Next Monday is, of course, Saint Patricks Day. How will our usual suspects celebrate? Assuming Archies not working on a case, hell certainly be with Lily Rowan as she hosts a dinner party. They probably wont be attending the annual parade (politically correct concerns aside, Archie and Lily dont strike me as parade people), therell be plenty of Irish-American comestibles (corned beef & cabbage, pub grub, etc) and some Celtic music going. (While Archie has had his palate educated to the point where hell take Guinness over green-dyed Budweiser, Lily is too good of a host to the more politically-connected of her guests *not* to have green beer.) Note that the above says Irish-American comestibles. Not Irish. For Irish cuisine, we would go to West 35th Street. Wolfe and Fritz would use the occasion, not for a formal celebration per se, but for experimentation on Irish themes. Some might suggest a deconstructed take on Irish stew (a crown roast of lamb with rosemary-dusted root vegetables in the middle, to be doused with a stout-ale-(ouch sorry)-based gravy); while Wolfe might try the dish, he would reject the phraseology. I think it more likely, however, that he would look at a cod chowder or baked brown trout as a starter, followed by some take on crubeen (pig trotters) and colcannon (potato and cabbage or kale). Fritz would probably offer a dessert using Irish whisky as a base or for a flambe effect, and while its doubtful that Wolfe would be sentimental enough about the day to change his usual beer preferences, I think hed be curious enough to try an imported or domestically-brewed Irish red ale.
