Nick Clegg has said his party’s performance in the European elections was gutting and heartbreaking and bitterly disappointing” but insisted he would not resign as leader. In an emotional interview in which Mr Clegg appeared tired and red-eyed the Liberal Democrat leader said the loss of all but one of his MEPs was a huge setback, conceding that his strategy of attacking Ukips Nigel Farage head-on had failed.
