Nicola Sturgeon, First Minister of Scotland. 16th November 2014. On a cold and damp Perth afternoon, with emotions running high The people’s man, bade a fond farewell, and said his last goodbye A tear or two appeared in eyes as our first lady took the stage And then a few more tears were shed, as she kissed her outgoing sage. The master had his reasons and thought it time that he stepped down And now, the Queen of Caledonia, would accept the people’s crown. We knew she was formidable as she has proven in the past These were different expectations but did this lady have the class? She caressed the stage with tartan shoes to match her tartan heart And with a smile of acceptance, acknowledged her new part It’s a monumental task ahead but she’s capable for them She’s had the best of teachers and now she’s at the helm She’ll fight for all he stood for and demand her views are heard For even now, adversaries, are afraid and running scared They’re afraid because she’s capable but they don’t know to what extent They’ll find out just soon enough and they’ll find out what she meant By what it means for liars and why they can’t, must not, exist Then she gave to us her promises and sealed them with a kiss. To tell a lie to anyone, you first must know the truth But to attack the poor, the needy, they are no more than uncouth And to all those who have divided, she gave promise to unite And to all of you who stood back and watched, you should all now stand and fight The people here have chosen you as champion for their cause And the mantle some thought too great, now rests firmly in your claws. I won’t embellish on your words, nor of the stage you made your own And although it seemed a solo act, you were never there alone As Scotland’s new First Minister you’ll take a nation and ascend To the heights, deserving of a people, and whose alliance, they extend. Paul Colvin.
