Niger State Governor Aliyu Charge Professional Bodies to Generate New Ideas in Housing and Urban Development to Address Challenges in the Sector. Professional Bodies in Nigeria especially those of land and urban sectors have been charged to brainstorm and create new ideas to tackle challenges in land urban development and housing policies. Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger State gave the charge at a one-day professional development workshop held at the ‘Yar’adua International Conference Center, Abuja. Governor Aliyu, Represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Musa Ibeto said the workshop should be able to look at issues of development and environment including the quality of our habitat and urban development. He stated that the forum should be able chart a way to help produce specialized graduates in the areas of evaluation, housing, geographic information system among others. The Governor explained that the state geographic information system would play a very critical role not only in effective land management but also in revenue generation to enable the state achieve its economic objectives. Speaking at the occasion, the Minister of Land and Housing, Ms. Amah Pepple said in the last two years, the Federal Government had initiated several undertakings to effectively reposition urban and housing sectors in order to optimize its contribution to national development. She said the initiative would also empower core professionals in the sector to support the administration to achieve the goals of revitalizing the critical sector of the national economy. The Minister noted that the rising occurrence of building collapse in Nigeria was receiving attention through the revision of the national building code. In a Lecture entitled; ‘Land Management in Nigeria and Reforms’, the State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mohammed Bashir Nuhu said the fragmentation of land due to economic holding for distribution had resulted into high incidence of poverty. He added that the magnitude and complexity of this problem could further be appreciated with the fact that land management in Nigeria was relatively an urban phenomenon. The Commissioner advised that to achieve a better land management in Nigeria there was the need to appraise the existing land management system in the country within the legal and administrative context.
